Monday- Today I read about church called the Phoenix Goddess Temple has been accused of being a house of prostitution, and a six-month undercover investigation has resulted in the arrests of 20 women and men who worked there, Phoenix police said Friday. Authorities are still searching for 17 more people -- all of whom have been indicted -- in connection with the prostitution enterprise, said Sgt. Steve Martos, a Phoenix police spokesman. The 20 people arrested so far have been charged with prostitution or other offenses, police said. During a Wednesday search of the Phoenix temple and two church-related sites in nearby Sedona, police seized evidence showing that "male and female 'practitioners' working at the Temple were performing sexual acts in exchange for monetary 'donations,' all on the pretense of providing 'neo tantric' healing therapies," Phoenix police said. The alleged brothel generated tens of thousands of dollars a month, Martos told CNN. A history of neighbor complaints, a recent Phoenix newspaper article, and the temple's website were among the factors prompting authorities to conduct the undercover investigation."What's unusual is that they were trying to hide behind religion or church, and under the guise of religious freedom, they were committing acts of prostitution," Martos said.
Tuesday- Today I read about Dr. Conrad Murray that said he never considered a plea deal to resolve the involuntary manslaughter charge against him in the death of Michael Jackson. The Jury were given a questionnaire, about 30 pages long, to determine if they can put aside biases and what they’ve heard about the pop star’s death to reach a fair verdict. Lawyers will question them about their answers when they return to court September. Murray’s defense team wasn’t able to convince Pastor and an appeals court to shelter jurors form trial media coverage by keeping them sequestered in a hotel for the duration of the trial. Chernoff and his team will have two weeks to study answers to the jury questionnaire to determine which potential jurors have already made up their minds about Murray’s guilt. They did it once before, but the trial was delayed over the summer. The Los Angeles coroner has rules that Michael Jackson’s death on June 25, 2009, was caused by an overdose of the surgical anesthetic propofol, combined with other drugs.

The boys took turns attacking each of the victims during the assault, which estimated lasted 30 to 40 minutes. It ended only when the attackers heard the voices of the girls’ family members calling for them. Before fleeing on a bicycle that was hidden nearby, the two boys threatened the girls with harm if they told anyone about the assault, Patrick said. The boys were arrested Thursday but were not together at the time. Rodriguez was arrested in Poway; Contreras in National City. How they knew each other was not explained in court. Ivan Contreras said outside of court that his brother Leonel and Rodriguez had known each other for about a year. He said his brother attended Iris Community school, a continuation school run by the county Office of Education and the Juvenile Court.

Thursday- Today I read about a girl who hung herself in the stairwell of her family’s apartment. Two classmates of a high school freshman pleaded guilty to charges of criminal harassment. Sean Mulveyhill and Kayla Narey entered their pleas in Hampshire Superior Court in connection with what was described as the systematic bullying of Phoebe Prince, 15, who took her life on January 14, 2010, after weeks of ridicule and teasing, First District Attorney Steven E. Gagne said in a statement. That day she had endured a barrage of harassment that began at the school library that continued as she walked home from school in tears, Gagne said. Mulveyhill and Narey, both 18, each received one year's probation, with special stipulations that include 100 hours of community service to assist underprivileged or at-risk youth, an order that they have no contact with the victim's family unless they get the family's consent, and barring them from financially profiting from the case while on probation. Mexican authorities apprehended about 25,000 illegal immigrants there last year, according to the country's National Migration Institute. In May, authorities said they found and detained more than 500 illegal immigrants from Central America and Asia who were crammed inside two tractor-trailers heading toward the United States.
