Wednesday - today I read about how Jurors began hearing testimony Monday as to whether a former New York cab driver from Afghanistan intentionally misled police probing his son's admitted plot to bomb the city's subway system. The trial of Mohammed Wali Zazi opened on Monday in a federal court in Brooklyn with prosecutors and defense attorneys offering drastically different accounts of his exchanges with investigators looking into charges against his son, Najibullah Zazi. But prosecutor Andrew Goldsmith, in his opening statement, contended that the elder Zazi knew exactly what he was doing, as he misled investigators. The 24-year-old testified that Mohammed Wali Zazi told him to lie and say that the elder Zazi was his father, and that he had been adopted. The uncertain relationship between Amanullah and Mohammed Zazi, who are biological cousins, is central to the case.

Tuesday-today I read about A California bounty hunter says he will sue Casey Anthony and her defense attorney Jose Baez for misleading him when he helped search for her young daughter Caylee. Leonard Padilla said he is seeking $200,000. He also says he spent $50,000 to bond out Anthony when she was initially jailed. He said he also brought in people to help provide security. He said he talked to Anthony on many occasions during that time and that she never said she knew where Caylee was. At the time of Caylee's disappearance, Anthony told family members and police that the little girl was with a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez. That account resulted in one of Anthony's lying convictions. Anthony also claimed Gonzalez had kidnapped the toddler. Authorities never found a nanny by that name who cared for Caylee. They did, however, find a woman named Zenaida Fernandez Gonzalez, who denied ever meeting Anthony. Gonzalez then filed the defamation lawsuit. The judge handling the defamation lawsuit set Anthony's deposition for October 8.

Monday- today I read about a 41 year old prisoner who is scheduled to be executed Wednesday for a murder he once said was fueled by patriotism, but which the state argued was motivated by pure hatred. The admitted white supremacist was convicted in the deadly shooting of an Indian man, part of a killing spree that began just after the September 11 terror attacks. His target: those he believed were of Middle Eastern background, in revenge and retaliation for the worst domestic terror incident in U.S. history. Citing his own statements to fellow inmates, a federal appeals court, in denying his claims, concluded that Stroman believed that the U.S. government "hadn't done their job, so he was going to do it for them" by retaliating. Stroman says his biggest regret is that he would leave his four children behind and says that being a capital inmate is a "nightmare come to life." Prisoner No. 999-409 also claims to be a changed man.

Today I read about the TV ads are dramatic, foreboding, and heavily suggestive of violence and sexual exploitation. And they were created by the U.S. government. The Department of Homeland Security airs the ads in Mexico and Central America to warn people about the dangers of illegal passage to the United States. But in an expansion of the program, DHS this week will begin airing similar ads in Florida, Georgia, and Washington -- key immigrant destinations.Officials say the U.S. ads are intended for several audiences: victims of human trafficking already in the United States, good Samaritans who want to report suspicious activity, and U.S. residents who may be considering paying for a relative's illegal passage, unwittingly putting them in harm's way.

Thursday- today I read about how Seventeen people and five "corporations" connected to a New York City escort service were indicted in Brooklyn Wednesday, charged with running a high-price prostitution and drug ring. The 144-count indictment includes allegations of enterprise corruption, promoting prostitution, money laundering, and criminal sale of a controlled substance against High Class NY, an escort service based in the Sheep head Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn. Fees for High Class NY's escort services allegedly ranged from $400 per hour to more than $3,600 per hour, and clients often spent more than $10,000 in one night, according to the indictment. Authorities claim the money paid for sexual contact with the escorts as well as cocaine and other controlled substances. According to the company's records, the escort service earned more than $7 million between September 2007 and November 2010, according to the indictment. In Friday’s morning blog I read about Most Americans couldn't care less about soccer. Until, that is, a group of foreign nationals who presumably live in this country boo the U.S. team, disrespect the national anthem, and wave the flag of the nation they left behind. Then we care a whole lot. Deal me in on that. On most days, I describe myself as a Mexican-American. I especially feel that way when confronting intolerance and discrimination against Mexicans. It's nothing new. A few years ago, a reader wrote to tell me that, as an Italian-American, he felt "more Italian" when he faced discrimination growing up.

Today I read about homophobia in Nigeria. In Nigeria, homophobia is alive and well. Rashidi Williams, who had faced physical abuse for his sexuality. Many Nigerians are convinced that homosexuality is "of the devil", against our "culture" and an encroachment of "sad Western values.“ Gays -- who only pray for the right to be left alone since they do the rest of us no harm - are the mortal threat to our "moral fabric". I think homophobia needs to stop around the world because gays are being looked down upon as sinful and of the devil when they do no harm to anyone but be the way they are. I feel like white people would dread life every day if they were harassed and frowned upon for being white. That’s exactly the discrimination that goes to gays, no matter what their race. It’s not fair just because the bible says so everyone has to show hate towards a certain group of people.
