In today’s paper I read about how a 23-year-old medical student, indicted on a first-degree murder charge in a killing tied to Craigslist, is to appear at an arraignment hearing Monday morning. Philip Markoff is accused in the fatal shooting of one woman and the robbery another in Boston hotels earlier this year. A Massachusetts grand jury late last week indicted him on the seven counts. Markoff is charged with the April 14 fatal shooting and attempted robbery of Julissa Brisman, 25, and the armed robbery of a 29-year-old Las Vegas woman on April 10. Investigators have linked both crimes to ads on the popular Web site Craigslist. He is also charged with "the armed and forcible confinement" of the two women, as well as two counts of unlawful firearm possession, the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said Sunday. The grand jury returned the seven count indictment late Thursday, and it moves the case from Boston Municipal Court to Suffolk Superior Court, where Markoff is expected to appear Monday. He previously pleaded not guilty in the city court and is being held without bail. In another story a three-letter typo has slashed years off a prison sentence for a repeat drug offender in Ohio. Calvin Eugene Wells of Akron was sentenced in October 2005 to 10 years in prison after being convicted of possessing more than 100 grams of cocaine, a first-degree felony. While serving his time, Wells discovered a stray word on the verdict form signed by the jurors who convicted him in Summit County Common Pleas Court. The form, typed up by a court or prosecutor's office employee, read: "We, the Jury, find the Defendant Guilty of the offense of possession of crack cocaine. "We, the jury, further find that the amount of crack cocaine WAS in the amount exceeding ten one hundred (100) grams as charged in the indictment.” Under Ohio law, for a person to be found guilty of a higher-level felony, the jury form must state either the degree of the offense or the circumstances that would make it a higher offense. The form's second sentence apparently was an attempt to state those circumstances, but the stray word muddled the meaning, Desiderio said. A three-judge panel of the Ohio Court of Appeals unanimously agreed. "The form is unclear, and we cannot determine what the jury understood 'ten one hundred (100) grams' to mean," Judge Eve Belfance wrote in the court's decision. "It certainly could have meant an amount exceeding one hundred grams, but it is possible the jury believed the form actually meant an amount exceeding less than one gram.“ I think that Markoff is guilty and will either be sentenced to death or life in prison without parole. In the other story, I do not believe that Wells should be serving a ten year sentence for such a small drug charge. However, this fact does not make him any less guilty.
What I read in today’s CNN news for June 22, 2009 is about a 22 year old medical student, Phillip Markoff, who was accused of two crimes this year. He was charged of fatally shooting and attempting to rob Julissa Brisman on April 14. On April 10, he was charged with an armed robbery of a 29- year old Las Vegas woman. Investigators have linked both crimes to ads on Craigslist. Markoff is charged with “ the armed and forcible confinement” of the two woman, and two counts of the possession of fire arms. The grand jury moves the case from Boston Municipal Court to Suffolk Superior Court, where Markoff is expected to appear. According to the city court he pleaded not guilty and is held without bail. Brisman, the woman that Markoff shot was shot three times at close range and suffered blunt head trauma at the Marriot Copley Place Hotel. According to Las Vegas police, the woman who was robbed was robbed of $800 and $250 in American Express gift cards. He has been charged with assault with the intent to rob, assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a handgun and use of a firearm while committing a crime of violence, stemming from an April 16 robbery attempt at a Holiday Inn Express in Warwick, Rhode Island.
Today I read about prisoners in Fishkill Correctional Facility that train puppies to become service dogs to help the disabled and even wounded soldiers. The puppies and prisoners are together 24 hours a day. The puppies sleep in crates in the inmates cell. They said some prisoners commit these crimes and still think that is only about them. The program called Puppies Behind Bars, is transforming these offenders. The inmates are given 8-week-old puppies to train them inside the facility. In return the puppies give the inmates something that some may never had- unconditional love. One inmate said he’s going to make his family and those around him proud of him. For some inmates who never knew love, never knew responsibilities, have only been told they are worthless- training these puppies is changing their lives. It teaches a lot like responsibilities and being patience. I think this is so cute and touching because being behind bars is not do fun and having a puppy is the best thing you can have. I cant imagine how fun it must be to train a puppy and saying that you did it. These inmates are learning so much, in a way animals can do it.
Today I read about five people that got stabbed at a party. This happened in a party in Chula Vista. The party was on 4th near Palomar street. It was reported about 11:30 Saturday night. Police were told that they had seen several people that had been fighting but no one saw the weapon. The suspects had left before police arrive. One suspect was described as a 25 year old Latino and the other suspect was described as Latino, 6 foot 3, about 200 pounds.
Interesting facts- The victims were taken to three different hospitals.
My Opinion- I think that sucks that they got stabbed but at least they did not die. This is something CIVIL the police will probably CONFER and then the judge will DEABATE.
In today news, a woman was trampled to death by a CIVIL cow. The lady was CONFER with her two dogs walking in northern England. The lady was 49 and her death occur after noon on Sunday. The report say’s the cow was over protective over her calves . This annual incident occur very rare because when do people are injured by cattle. The police are DEBATEING with the judge to give the cow punishment . The lady will soon be barred in this week. The cow wont see light again ever.
