Today in the news I read about President Obama ordering an additional 12,000 marines to Afghanistan. These troops will help in the support efforts and carrying out missions in a worsening situation. The fighting in Afghanistan is supposed to increase due to the coming warmer months. In other news fire fighters in the city of San Diego were awarded 34,000 dollars being made to ride in a gay parade. These fire fighter’s say they were sexually harassed by parade goers. The fire fighters initially asked for 1 million dollars but due to our troubled economy they got less then what they expected. In world news Secretary of Sate Hillary Clinton went to southeast Asia to improve relations in a once forgotten region. These talks condemned Kim Jongs missile threats and said they would right the wrongs of the Bush administration.
Today in The Union Tribune I read about the Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson. Yesterday he pleaded not guilty yesterday to a misdemeanor drunken-drinking chargers from his January 6 arrest. Jackson was not required to appear at San Diego Superior Court for his arraignment and did not. Instead, his attorney entered the plea by fax. According to a California Highway Patrol spokesman, Jackson was driving east on state Route 52 near interstate 805 shortly after 2:30 a.m. He was brought to county jail but was released by 6 a.m. His blood-alcohol measured 0.17 and the legal limit is 0.08 percent. Jackson was arrested two nights after the Chargers playoff victory over Indianapolis and less than a week before the club’s playoff game against the Steelers. The highway patrol seen Jackson driving in A bmw that was swerving eastbound interstate 8.
Today I read about how the jury awarded $34,300 to firefighters over the parade. The firefighters went to trial because they say that they were sexually harassed. Juror Kathy Meyer said it was difficult and that the department should have paid more attention and took the guys a little more seriously. She believed that they didn’t lied. This is the second time that the firefighters have gone to trial on the sexual harassment claim. In the trial on October, a jury was asked to award each firefighter up to $1 million. One of the guys said he just wanted to be vindicated and that his happy this ended in their favor. One also said the money was never an issue. The jury has force the city to acknowledge that what happened to their clients is a violation of their rights. The firefighters said that their supervisor ignored them when they said they did not want to be in the parade. So the firefighters left happy that this was finally over and that they realize it was a violation of their rights.
Today, in the San Diego Union Tribune, I read about Obama’s stimulus plan, and how it should effect our economical disaster. Barack Obama signed a $787 billion stimulus package, as well as a $50 billion foreclosure rescue plan for American in danger of losing their homes. The plan is a mix of spending and tax cuts, which will soon provide $400 of tax breaks to individuals and $800 for couples. In another article, keeping seals from becoming extinct in La Jolla is the topic. After years of court battles about a colony of seals in La Jolla, San Diego City Council provided more than $1 million in legal fees and cleanup work at the Children’s Pool in La Jolla. San Diego is currently bound by state law to maintain Children’s Pool as a swimming area for people. Although this is true, a Superior Judge has ordered a reduction of contamination at the site, which will likely involve scaring away the seals and dredging the beach. It is very good to know that Obama is taking crucial steps in rebuilding the United States, and that San Diego residents are finding reasonable and safe solutions to public problems.
In today’s paper I read about a gang member who fired shots at a cop car. An off-duty police sergeant was shot at by a documented gang member while driving on the freeway. He was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder. The man is 26 years of age and is being held without bail. He is also being charged with possession of silencer and firearms charges. The officer that was shot at was on his way to work around 8p.m. in his own car heading north on interstate 5 at eighth street. The officer saw a car speeding up behind him so he switched lanes to let him pass, then pulled behind him to get his license plates number. The officer suspected that the driver was drunk. The gang member hit the brakes hard and started shooting at the officer who then backed off. Then the gang member shot two more shots at the officers car. The officer reported the shooting and a short time later the man was pulled over in Chollas View at 45th an G street. The gun was recovered and he was taken into custody.
In today's paper I had read that today was the day Dale Earnhardt dies in a last lap crash at the Daytona 500 in Daytona beach. He was 49 years of age. Also today is the day that mark twain published his famous and famously controversial novel. Today also is the day that California supreme court strikes down the death penalty. Also three people are killed in a bus bombing in London nine days after the IRA ended its ceasefire.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune a gang member was arrested for firing shots at a police officer. The officer was following a car who he suspected was being driven by a drunk driver on the five freeway snorth bound after the off ramp to eight avenue on the west side of National City. The officer said the man fired four shots at him after the driver noticed he was being followed. The officer said he was trying to write down the car’s license plate and did not fire back at the man. The officer was off-duty during the incident. Officers then in marked cars attempted to pull the man over but the gang member was persistent and drove his vehicle putting him in a chase. The man was finally pulled over in the Chollas view at 45th and g street. The gun was recovered and he faces charges for attempted murder and possession of fire arm with a silencer. He is currently being held without bail. The man is a documented gang member and he shot at an off duty police officer. The officer was probably a GSU and tried to get the man busted. The gang member already hates GSU so he shot at him.
