Airline performance improved in 2008 for the first time in five years, according to an annual airline quality report released Monday. The survey, conducted by two veteran industry experts, ranks the 17 biggest U.S. airlines based on baggage handling, on-time arrivals, denied boardings and customer complaints. After a record-low industry rating in 2007, all 17 airlines improved their performance in 2008, according to the Airline Quality Rating (AQR) report. The overall airline industry improved in all four major elements - "a rare occurrence," the report said. The 19th annual report is co-authored by researchers Brent Bowen, an aviation expert from St. Louis University, and Dean Headley, a business analyst from Wichita State University.Data came from U.S. Department of Transportation reports and opinion surveys of more than 5,000 frequent travelers on the report's criteria.
A 22 year old man repeatedly stabbed his friends mother for no apparent reason. The 72 year old grandmother was stabbed several times yesterday at her home. The woman was steam-cleaning her grandson’s carpet while visiting him from Florida. While the grandson was out of the room the man suddenly attacked the grandmother from the back. The woman was stabbed and slashed on her neck, chest and hands. The grandson came in and pulled the fool off the old lady and wrestled with him till the police showed up. The man was arrested and booked for suspicion of attempted murder. The woman is expected to survive. She said she had only meet him once before.
Today in the Union Tribune I read about a stolen plane. The pilot suspected of stealing a plane from Canada and flying into the U.S. was trailed by fighter jets. The pilot was captured last night after landing on a stretch of dirt road. The four-seat Cessna plane was caught by fighter jets over Wisconsin. The plane kept heading south after the fighter pilots tried to persuade him to follow them over the radio. The man then landed the plane is southwestern Missouri and ran away. A man now identified as Adam Leon was caught in the same general area. In other U.S. news a man living in Cleveland is going to appeal U.S. immigration to prevent from going back to Germany. Jon Demjanjuk 89 is wanted in Germany for 29,000 counts of accessory to murder. The man is accused of being a death camp guard in Poland during 1943. Demjanjuk denies any connection to the death camp but a judge has turned down his decision and revoked his stay. In world news I read about the North Korean Missile launch the other day. Kim Jong il has expressed great satisfaction over this rocket launch. Even after tracking by the world and other countries that said the satellite did not go into orbit he is still exited over this botched launch. The satellite story is said to be propaganda to Jong’s people of North Korea.
In today’s paper I read about how the 73-year-old woman who was arrested for grand theft and embezzlement is trying to PERSUADE everyone that she is innocent. In CONTRAST to her charges, Virginia Kelly said that she is just trying to help her community. She claims that she had every intention of handing out the 11,000 toys she stockpiled for children in need. In another story, avoiding layoffs may pay in the long run. Even in the major recession, some companies are choosing to keep their employees and CRITIQUE other aspects of their business instead. This strategy is built on the fact that layoffs bring high costs and hassles of their own. In another story, a motorcyclist is killed in a collision with a car. The man died yesterday as he collided with a small car on the state Route 79 near Warner Springs, the California Highway Patrol said. The single person in the car was injured by the airbag and was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido. In another story, a third person died after a rollover crash. Lucia Lopez, 17, died about 2:45 p.m. Sunday at San Diego hospital. Two other victims of the crash died at the scene. The driver and four passengers were ejected from the Ford Mustang. None were wearing their seatbelts, and alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the incident.
