Today in the Union Tribune I read about how De La Hoya, a gold medal winner at the 1992 Olympic Games, has decided to retire from his boxing career. He has not fought since being stunned by Filipino Manny Pacquiao with an eighth-round TKO in their nontitle fight in Las Vegas in December. Although Pacquiao had moved up two classes for his first bout at welterweight, he dominated De La Hoya from the opening bell. The Mexican-American with the matinee idol good looks has been one of the most popular figures in boxing for more than a decade and was rated the sport’s best pound-for-pound fighter for the first time 1997.

In today’s paper, I read about how Federal agents took down three men after a lengthy narcotics investigation. The heavily armed LABOR force swarmed a van and took three men into custody yesterday afternoon. The officials were described by a witness as an FBI SWAT team in an armored vehicle that was backed by the highway patrol. After directing the men in the vehicle to exit and put their hands up in both Spanish and English, FBI agents APPLIED the use of three concussion grenades before removing the driver at gunpoint. FBI spokesmen Darrell Foxworth confirmed that three men would be booked into a federal jail, but he would not say on what type of charges. In another story, a woman yesterday CONTRACTED gruesome injuries after off-and-on boyfriend beat and set her on fire. The man is said to have beaten her before dousing her legs with a flammable liquid and setting her on fire. A neighbor pulled Carr, the victim, and Wimler out of the burning trailer. Wimler, 46, must stand trial on nine felony counts including attempted murder, false imprisonment, aggravated mayhem and arson. If convicted, Wimler faces a maximum penalty of life in prison. In another story, a man guilty of murder faces life without parole. Sadiq Saibu, 25, was found guilty of a murder stemming from a shooting at City Heights liquor store. Also, Saibu was convicted of other felony charges, including attempted murder and attempted robbery.

The San Diego Union Tribune reports federal agents arrest 3 in narcotic investigations. Heavily armed federal agents swarmed van and too three men into custody yesterday afternoon as a parts of narcotics investigations. The incident took place off lemon grove avenue. Witnesses described an FBI SWAT team in an armored vehicle, backed by the California highway patrol officers who stopped the van and ordered the men out of the van. After the men refused to come out of the van after first orders the team shot two concussion grenades into the van, removed the driver at gunpoint, and the two other men emerged shortly afterward surrendering. The witnesses did not want to give their names in fear of the retaliations of the drug traffickers. This statement just shows how the terrorism in another country can affect the United States citizens.
