Today I read about Iraq having its 2009 elections. It had record breaking turnouts. Last election many people protested the elections but this year in the provinces with the worst fighting had a 41 percent turnout. In local news I read about restaurant employees in Old Town face layoffs. Old Town States park’s Casa de Reyes Restaurant is one of about 150 employees who have been laid off as a new company prepares to take over the parks largest concession. In sports news the Steelers beat the Cardinals to become national champs. Santonio Holmes had the winning catch to win the game seconds before the clock ran out.

What I read in today's Union Tribune newspaper for February 2, 2009 was about a teenage girl was shot outside a house function. According to the girl’s friends and neighbors, she was a 16 year old girl who was from National City and attended Mission Bay High School. The girl was killed at the same AREA where she got shot. The small house function was located in the Mountain View neighborhood, and she was shot around 2:40 am. According to the police, the girl was standing on the sidewalk on South 42nd street near Ocean View Boulevard in front of the house. She was at least with someone before the whole thing had happened. A 15 year old girl was walking back to the house when she heard gun shots and ran to where it came from not until she saw the girl lying on the floor unconscious. At least 2 to 3 shots were fired, and strike the girl in the lower abdomen area. The girl was nicknamed Skippy, because she was always in a good mood, and she would always skip around. A woman who had nurse training and tried to help the girl, not until she stopped breathing and that was when she found out it was all too late. The woman CLARIFIED that she was dead. I think its sad that the girl got shot even though she didn’t even do anything. She even lost her own life. She was too young to die.

Today I read about restaurant employees at Old Town face layoffs. Old Town States Park’s Casa de Reyes Restaurant is one of about 150 employees who have been given pink slips as a new company prepares to take over the parks largest concession. The company, Old Town Family Hospitality, is taking on the money-losing contract from New York-based Delaware North, and as part of its financial turnaround plan, it wants to shut out the union that represents employees at two of the concessions three restaurants. The new contract holder has invite all 150 employees to reapply for their jobs, but with no guarantees. They have made it clear that many wont be rehired because the company doesn’t want to inherit the union. There's a lot of people that gone be loosing their jobs because of this. The new operators intention is to cut labor costs as much as possible.

In today’s San Diego Union Tribune I read about one of the most important day in the year, the day not even a woman can distract any real man from watching, yes Super Bowl Night. This year it is my second favorite team, Steelers versus the Cardinals of Arizona. I knew from the day the Steelers faced off with the San Diego chargers, that they would be the winners to this year’s Super Bowl. When the game went off into the half time I was worried the cardinals would score a touch down but the Steelers'’ linebacker James Harrison (92) caught a 100 yard interception return for a touchdown on the last play in the half. This was the longest play in Super Bowl history. They teams went into the rooms with a 17-7 lead in favor of the Steelers. Steelers scored at the end of the game but left the cardinals with 2:37 seconds remaining. Cardinals were left with a chance to score. They got the ball into the 30 yard area and then the QB was blitzed and was forced to fumble the ball with less than 30 seconds left. At this time the Cardinals were down by four so not even a field goal could save them. the games ending score was not to be clarified.

The article I read this morning was about a 16 year old girl who got shot and died. The name of the teenage girl has not yet been released. The only thing they released about her was that she was known as Skippy because she was always happy and skipping. She was a student at Mission Bay High school. She lived in National City. Skippy was outside a party with at least one other person when a car stopped in front of her and shot three shots hitting her once in the lower abdomen. A lady that lived inside the house who is a training nurse tried to help Skippy but she then stopped breathing. Nobody except another 15 year old girl said they saw anything except for a silver car and that’s it.
I think that whoever did this gets caught for killing an innocent person. I hope that teenagers who have been partying and not been watching out learn from this. I feel bad for the girl and her family.
An interesting fact that I learned was that all neighbors always want to be nosy, but when it comes to someone getting shot nobody wants to open there mouth.
