In today’s Union Tribune I read about how SDSU’s Cox Arena will be now called Viejas Arena. The University has sold the naming rights of its sports arena to the Viejas Brand of Kumeyaay Indians, which operates a casino, an outlet center and other businesses at its reservation 22 miles east of campus. In another story, President Obama aides push idea for expediting agenda. Members of Obama’s administration are pressing lawmakers to use a shortcut to drive the president’s signature on health care and energy through Congress without counting Republican votes. Republicans are expressing their disapproval on the proposal to expand health coverage and tax greenhouse gas emissions without their input, warning that it could damage relations with the new president. In yet another story, a sex offender is being charged with a SDSU student. Authorities believe the student may have died of a drug overdose at a party, however, they are not ruling the John Steven Burgess out. Burgess pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday to charges of involuntary manslaughter, sale or transportation of heroin and cocaine, and a misdemeanor count.
According to the San Diego Union Tribune I read that Obama will be sending aid to Southwestern border states. Both ICE and the immigration and customs enforcement agency will receive man power and federal aid. Ice will be receiving ninety officers from around the country to the southwestern states of New México, Arizona, California, and Texas. The border patrol will higher ninety new men to help regulate the border. The violence has greatly decreased in cities south of the border but people are still in danger of death because cartel leaders are still free and recruiting. Thirty-two agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are being deployed to the region. There job will be to stop the gunrunners. The violence has already flowed over to this side and the U.S. government is trying to stop it before it gets any more serious.
Today in The Union Tribune I read about how San Diego State University has sold the naming rights of its sports arena to the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians which operates a casino, an outlet center and other businesses at its reservation 22 miles east of campus. Critics say the deal, apparently a first in the nation for a university, could cross a line and hurt students, who are particularly vulnerable to gambling problems. I don’t think the should have changed the name of the arena. I liked it being called The Cox Arena.
What I read in today’s Union Tribune newspaper for March 18, 2009 was about a sex offender who is charged in the death of SDSU student. An SDSU student may have died from a drug overdose at a party. 19 year old Donna Jou had an accidental death from a drug overdose, and her body had never been found. John Stevens Burgess pleaded not guilty in Los Angeles Superior Court on March 17, 2009. He was charged of involuntary manslaughter, sale or transportation oh heroin and cocaine, and the accidental death of 19 year old Donna. Burgess gave Donna heroine and cocaine at his party that took place in his Los Angeles home that he was renting. Donna then passed out on a chair then later died. According to investigators, Burgess told them that he had rented a boat and dumped her body into the ocean. The next day, her body was dumped, Donna’s family received a suspicious text from her cell phone saying her cell phone battery was dying and she was going to be home soon. Burgess is now serving three year prison sentence for failing to register as a sex offender.
