Today in the news I read about two navy vessels colliding. The vessels are running on their own power. In other world news off the coast of Somalia pirates captured a Greek vessel. The pirates have taken over the cargo ship and are probably going to hold It for ransom. Pirates off the coast of Somalia have increased their piracy. The fisherman of Somalia have found that robbing ships has been way more lucrative. In other news the Israeli military is investigating the war crimes in the Gaza strip.

In the San Diego Union Tribune I read about the riot that broke out in a maximum security state penitentiary. More than three dozen inmates found each other killing one person and injuring four others with serious injury. The dead man was a 23 year old after he was stabbed and died on the operating table. He was serving a 37 year sentence on a Los Angeles conviction of robbery with a fire arm and because he was a known gang member. The fight involving 39 inmates began around 3:20 p.m. the guards used guns with air projectiles. This is a less deadly way to break up fights. Unfortunately no prison employees were injured. The high security prison houses about 4,900 inmates one of California's over packed detention centers.

In today’s paper, I read about how during a drug police pursuit, drug suspects tossed cash out the car window. Motorists stopped on freeways yesterday and to collect cash that the drug suspects tossed like confetti from their pickup while leading police on a pursuit. Surprisingly some civilians who got in on the cash-grab later returned the money to authorities. Even on 16-year-old boy turned over $570 at the departments northeast division station. In another story, San Diego made its plans to borrow $103 million today for repair projects. The plan calls for the city to use two libraries and the police headquarters as collateral to borrow money to repair 78 miles of streets, 2,316 sidewalks, storm drains, libraries and fire stations, among other things. In a final story, twenty-one people crammed onto a small boat that police believed was being used to smuggle immigrants into the United States. The 25-foot panga, a type of boat commonly used for fishing in Mexico, had a safe capacity of four to six people. Of the 21 people, six were women, one of whom were pregnant. All voluntarily went to the coast guard boat and were later turned over to U.S Customs and Border Protection Officials.
